Day 5 - Serving at Manos Unidas

Today our team got the opportunity to spend the entire day at a “Soup Kitchen” called Manos Unidas.  It is run by a couple who are originally from Michigan, but accepted the call to Honduras four years ago.  Terry and Shari were a sweet couple who have a heart for the “lepers” of San Pedro Sula.  They open up their facility twice a week, offering the homeless a opporunity for a shower, haircut, meal, and a bible study.

With the opporuntiy to spend most of the day in one location, our team quickly picked up several different projects, showing our flexibility and various talents.  We had folks working on a leaking roof, people moping and cleaning floors, painting, cooking, and preparing the space for our service!  Once the doors were open, we had a medical team helping those in need, a team giving haircuts, while others prepared the food for serving the meal.  It was amazing to see each member of our team fill a role and serve the Lord wherever they were needed!

Here are a couple pics:

Kris Jones cleaning floors.  The shelter has had a great deal of flooding over the past couple of weeks.  The rainy season has moved in and it seems to downpour daily in the evening.  Tim Reynolds spent most of the morning on the roof trying to patch many of the holes and limit the amount of water.

Many of us worked in the women’s bathroom and shower.  This is an important area to Shari, who has a heart for women and children.  She had planned for several months to paint and clean the area, but her and Terry’s health had limited their ability.  We were able to scrap the walls and get several coats of paint.  I felt like I was back at 1207 Pradero Drive, but was thankful for the ability to serve.  We were able to get the room done and Shari was extemely happy with the results!

Tim Reynolds cutting it up!  Tim, Drew, and Kevin (our interpreter) served as the barber shop.

Roxanne, Chuck, and Sandy handled the medical needs of many of the adults and children.

Before the meal, we had the opportunity to provide a service for the homeless folks.  Cameron and Beef shared tremendous testimonies of overcoming addiction and sin and then Drew brought the message.  One of the homeless men came forward and prayed for Jesus to come into his life. It was humbling and yet another overwelming moment of the week.  They are literally overflowing at this point.

We ended the night with another trip to Baleadas Express!  It was a nice ending to a tremendous day.  Tommorrow, we make a couple trips back to Neuva Espranza and Los Bordos.  We start the morning at the orphanage, but this time we will spend the morning with their babies and toddlers.  It is going to be one of the toughest things I have ever dealt with and one that needs much prayer.  We will head back to Los Bordos for the afternoon, where will we be providing rice and beens to approximately 400 families.  Please pray for safety as we conduct the food distribution.

I can’t believe we are looking at our last full day of ministry.  I am looking forward to a day break on Saturday, but it is going to be hard to enjoy the beach knowing that there are so many people suffering.

God Bless, Bo!!
