The Hunger of a 5-Year old!

Watching my 5-year old son Colby grow up is such a blast!  Becoming a dad and trying to lead my family is overwhelming at times, but seeing your kids literally grow and develop into “little” people right before your eyes is such a blessing from God.  Colby is learning so much right now, but watching him learn is also teaching me a lot.

Colby is so hungry to read right now.  He is learning new words every day and if you stop by my house you will see hundreds of little notes, post it’s, and cards that he has written.  They might say something like “I love you Kallee” or they might say something completely incoherent like “I will it See Dog.”  He is just obsessed.  It might be a street sign, a shirt logo, or an advertisement, but Colby sees nothing but words.  And he wants to learn them.

He is just HUNGRY to learn.  The more he learns, the more hungry he gets.  The more he learns, the more excited he gets.  The more he learns, the more he wants to make sure his friends and family knows.

“Dad, do you know how to spell the word will?  I do, it’s W-I-L-L.”

“Kallee, do you know how to spell the word mom?  M-O-M.

“Mom, what about the word  look? L-O-O-K.”

“Can you read this book?  Come here, I will show you how to read it.”

He has the hunger to grow and learn.  And he knows that learning to read it is going to change his life.

And that is where I have been convicted by the Holy Spirit.  Shouldn’t my life should look a lot like my five year old son’s. I should be hungry from the Word of God.

“As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the Word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.”

                                                                                    1 Peter 2:2

Do I have that hunger?  Paul challenges us to have a longing for the Word of God.  To study its Truth and to become mature in our faith.  He knew the power of the Word first hand.  It had changed his life forever.  I know the power as well.  I have seen it transform my life, my motivations, and my purpose.  But am I hungry?  And do I desire it with all of my being?

There’s not better time than now.  It’s time to eat.
